In brief
Brilinta contains ticagrelor, an antiplatelet medicine prescribed after acute coronary syndrome. It makes platelets less sticky to help prevent a heart attack or unstable angina.
Ticagrelor and platelet stickiness once acute coronary syndrome has occurred
People who have been through acute coronary syndrome may be given Brilinta to lower the likelihood of a heart attack or of unstable angina. As the Australian Brilinta consumer information explains, ticagrelor reduces how readily platelets stick together, so harmful clots are less likely to form.
This listing shows ticagrelor 60 mg and 90 mg. It does not name the manufacturer of the product supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches your prescription.
Ticagrelor 90 mg in 28, 56 and 112 tablet packs
Compare packs of the same strength. These examples are for 90 mg and are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 9 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
| Strength | Pack size | Pack price | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 mg | 28 tablets | A$117.82 | A$4.21 |
| 90 mg | 56 tablets | A$202.60 | A$3.62 |
| 90 mg | 112 tablets | A$331.93 | A$2.96 |
Measured against the 28-tablet pack, a single tablet costs around 14.0% less in the 56 pack and around 29.6% less in the 112 pack.
A lower price per unit means a larger upfront payment. Choose only the quantity and strength appropriate to your prescription, and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.
Film-coated and mouth-dispersible 90 mg forms in the October 2023 leaflet
AstraZeneca Pty Ltd is the Australian sponsor of Brilinta, and its consumer information was revised in October 2023. That document covers 90 mg tablets in two forms, film-coated and orally dispersible; a 60 mg tablet is not described in it. The leaflet asks for the tablets to be taken regularly at the same times each day, with or without food, exactly as the doctor directs.
Ulcer bleeds, haemorrhagic stroke and severe liver disease
The leaflet says Brilinta must not be taken by anyone with a bleeding problem, for example a stomach or bowel bleed caused by an ulcer, or by people with severe liver disease. A history of bleeding into the brain, known as haemorrhagic stroke, also rules it out. People currently taking ketoconazole, clarithromycin, nefazodone, ritonavir or atazanavir are excluded as well.
Surgery, NSAIDs, SSRIs and a slower pulse
Bleeding is more likely while on ticagrelor, particularly around surgery or a dental procedure. Taking it alongside NSAIDs, certain anticoagulants or SSRIs adds to that bleeding risk. Shortness of breath is common, affecting more than 10% of people, and the heartbeat may become slow or irregular. Treatment should not be stopped before talking to the doctor.
Original blister, under 30 °C, away from damp
Brilinta’s consumer information recommends leaving the tablets in their original blister below 30 °C and away from moisture and heat. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
