In brief
Cefalexin is the ingredient in both Keflex capsules and Keflex suspension. Its Australian leaflet covers bacterial infections of the airways, sinuses, middle ear, skin, kidneys and bladder.
Throat, tonsil, kidney and soft-tissue infections listed for Keflex
Bacterial infections treated with Keflex, as set out in the Keflex leaflet on myDr, include those of the respiratory tract (throat, tonsils, chest and lungs), sinusitis, middle ear infection, infections of the skin and soft tissue, and kidney and bladder infections.
This listing shows cefalexin 250 mg and 500 mg. It does not name the manufacturer of the product supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches your prescription.
Cefalexin 250 mg priced in 30, 90 and 180 unit packs
Compare packs of the same strength. These examples are for 250 mg and are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 9 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
| Strength | Pack size | Pack price | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 mg | 30 | A$47.41 | A$1.58 |
| 250 mg | 90 | A$122.13 | A$1.36 |
| 250 mg | 180 | A$216.97 | A$1.21 |
Compared with buying 30, a unit costs roughly 14.1% less in the 90 pack and roughly 23.7% less in the 180 pack.
A lower price per unit means a larger upfront payment. Choose only the quantity and strength appropriate to your prescription, and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.
ARTG entries 73522 and 73523 and another cefalexin brand, Ibilex
Aspen Pharmacare Australia is the sponsor of Keflex. The Therapeutic Goods Administration lists the Keflex 250 mg capsule blister pack as ARTG 73522 and the 500 mg pack as ARTG 73523; the leaflet adds oral suspensions at 125 mg/5 mL and 250 mg/5 mL. Ibilex, by contrast, is a different brand name for cefalexin in Australia. These entries cover the registration of Keflex only and say nothing about the registration status of the product supplied through this listing.
Who Keflex excludes, and its colitis, kidney and liver cautions
An allergy to cefalexin, to penicillin, to any other cephalosporin or to a capsule ingredient means Keflex is not used, its leaflet states. It warns that prolonged diarrhoea carries a risk of serious colitis, and people with kidney or liver disease need extra care. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are topics to discuss with a doctor.
Keflex with or without food, the full course and metformin
Keflex can be taken with or without a meal, and the leaflet asks for the whole prescribed course to be completed. It names two medicines that interact: probenecid and metformin. If you take metformin, ask your doctor or pharmacist about this interaction.
Thrush and diarrhoea in the Keflex leaflet, plus urgent warning signs
The more common effects in the leaflet are diarrhoea, feeling sick, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, tiredness, headache and thrush of the mouth or vagina. Go to a doctor urgently, the leaflet says, for a severe allergic reaction, severe bloody diarrhoea with a fever, a seizure, jaundice or confusion.
Capsule strength decides the Keflex temperature limit
For the 250 mg Keflex capsule the leaflet gives a limit of below 25 °C, while the 500 mg capsule is to stay below 30 °C. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
